How Do I Get Grass Into a Chicken Run?

Keeping grass alive in a busy chicken run can feel almost impossible — those happy little scratchers are experts at turning green into bare dirt overnight. On our Grumbles Homestead, we’ve had to get creative to give the flock fresh grazing while still protecting the ground they live on. In this video and post, we’re sharing some simple, realistic ways to bring grass back into your run without turning it into a full-time job.

Chickens don’t just nibble on grass — they scratch, dig, dust bathe, and hunt for bugs, which means they’re constantly disturbing the soil. In a small, fixed run, the birds simply spend too much time on the same patch of ground for anything delicate to survive. Add in rain, mud, and the occasional flock zoomies, and it’s no surprise that lush grass turns into a packed dirt lot in no time.

Instead of fighting your chickens’ natural behavior, it helps to work with it. Rotational grazing, offering protected grass boxes, and seeding hardy mixes all let your flock enjoy fresh greens while giving the plants time to recover. In the video above, we walk through exactly how we’re getting grass back into our chicken run here at Grumbles Homestead, step by step.
